Rick Warren Hopes to Recover After Firestick Plant Accident

Pastor Rick Warren, of the Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, is expected to recover from an incident involving the toxic sap from a firestick plant, which left him hospitalized. The incident occurred on Monday.
Rick Warren tweeted the following on Wednesday, "My eyes were severely burned by a toxic poison. Hospitalized Mon. Excruciating pain. Now home. Pray my sight loss is restored" In that Tweet he was speaking of the toxic sap of the firestick plant when he referred to poison.
Later, Rick Warren tweeted "Thank you for prayers for my eyes. Another doctor visit this PM. May God use this pain for His Glory. Rom.8:28." On Thursday, he added, "A doctor put protective contacts on my corneas as bandages during the healing. I am NOT blind. Thank you."
Rick Warren founded and is d senior pastor of Saddleback Church. He also wrote the book, "The Purpose Driven Life," which has sold over 30 million copies.
In 2008, Rick Warren became somewhat embroiled in the Presidential Election. First, in August, he invited both candidates, Barack Obama and John McCain, to his Saddleback Church for what was called the "Civil Forum on the Presidency." The forum marked McCain and Obama's first joint appearance as the as the parties' nominees and was broadcast live on national television.
Later that year, in December, Rick Warren was in the news again when President-elect Obama named him to give the invocation at his inauguration ceremony. The decision angered pro-choice and LGBT advocates and led to criticism of both Warren and Obama and Warren.
The firestick plant is also known as the pencil tree. It is a succulent, and the sap of the firestick plant can cause skin irritation and temporary blindness if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes.
