NFL penalized Green Bay Packers defensive end Johnny Jolly with an indefinite suspension without pay for breaking the football league’s policy against substance abuse.
According to reports, the suspension is effective immediately and will last “at least through the 2010 season.” Jolly, 27, can submit an application for reinstatement after the Super Bowl XLV in February next year.
In July 2008, Jolly was arrested for possession of about 200 grams of codeine. He is facing trial on drug charges in Houston and could be sentenced to 20 years in jail if convicted.
Ted Thompson, general manager of the Green Bay Packers, said in a statement, “Johnny is a good player that loves everything about the game of football. We appreciate the contributions he has made to the Packers the past four seasons. His focus and priorities now lie elsewhere – our thoughts are with him during this difficult personal time.”
